After 5 draws to start the season, Melbourne Victory recorded a win at last when they got up 2-0 at home against Queensland Roar. For much of the first half the visitors had the better of play, but were unable to convert their opportunities and the scores remained deadlocked past the hour mark. But the game was to be turned on its head at 67 minutes when Roar defender Sasa Ogenenovski brought down Leandro Love and the referee pointed to the spot. Kevin Muscat slotted home the penalty, and a second goal was to come 5 minutes from time when Archie Thompson was left unmarked within scoring range to boot home the winner. Melbourne Victory 2 (K Muscat 68 pen, A Thompson 85) Queensland Roar 0 Referee - B Williams. Crowd - 25,622 at Telstra Dome. Sydney FC extended their winning streak to 2 games when they overcame Newcastle at the SFS on Saturday night. Brazilian marquee Juninho returned from injury, and a clever flick pass found Alex Brosque, whose strike hit the corner of the net. 1-0 was how the score would remain, although the Jets had a golden opportunity for a late equaliser only to be denied by a superb save by Sydney keeper Clint Bolton. The result has lifted Sydney to within striking distance of the top 4, but is Newcastle's first defeat of the 2007/08 A-League season. Sydney FC 1 (A Brosque 36) Newcastle Jets 0 Referee - C Zetter. Crowd - 13,755 at Sydney Football Stadium. Ladder leaders Central Coast tasted defeat for the first time this season after a late winner from Adelaide's Bruce Djite. Djite had already been on the scoreboard after back-heeling past the Mariners 'keeper Danny Vukovic, a goal that was cancelled out by a scrambling effort from Sasho Petrovski. The match appeared headed for a draw, but the momentum changed with 12 minutes on the clock when Mariners captain Tony Vidmar received his second yellow and was condemned to the sidelines for the remainder. The Mariners struggled after being reduced to 10 men, with Djite delivering the knockout blow when his header was deflected by Vukovic into the net. Adelaide United 2 (B Djite 19, 88) Central Coast Mariners 1 (S Petrovski 37) Referee - M Breeze. Crowd - 11,019 at Hindmarsh Stadium. |
