After 5 draws to start the season, Melbourne Victory recorded a win at last
when they got up 2-0 at home against Queensland Roar. For much of the
first half the visitors had the better of play, but were unable to convert their
opportunities and the scores remained deadlocked past the hour mark. But
the game was to be turned on its head at 67 minutes when Roar defender
Sasa Ogenenovski brought down Leandro Love and the referee pointed to
the spot. Kevin Muscat slotted home the penalty, and a second goal was to
come 5 minutes from time when Archie Thompson was left unmarked within
scoring range to boot home the winner.

Sydney FC extended their winning streak to 2 games when they overcame
Newcastle at the SFS on Saturday night. Brazilian marquee Juninho returned
from injury, and a clever flick pass found Alex Brosque, whose strike hit the
corner of the net.
1-0 was how the score would remain, although the Jets had a golden
opportunity for a late equaliser only to be denied by a superb save by
Sydney keeper Clint Bolton. The result has lifted Sydney to within striking
distance of the top 4, but is Newcastle's first defeat of the 2007/08
A-League season.

Ladder leaders Central Coast tasted defeat for the first time this season after
a late winner from Adelaide's Bruce Djite. Djite had already been on the
scoreboard after back-heeling past the Mariners 'keeper Danny Vukovic, a
goal that was cancelled out by a scrambling effort from Sasho Petrovski.
The match appeared headed for a draw, but the momentum changed with
12 minutes on the clock when Mariners captain Tony Vidmar received his
second yellow and was condemned to the sidelines for the remainder. The
Mariners struggled after being reduced to 10 men, with Djite delivering the
knockout blow when his header was deflected by Vukovic into the net.

Competition newcomers Wellington Phoenix continued their strong start to their debut A-League
campaign, moving into the top 4 with a comprehensive 4-1 win over Perth Glory at Westpac
Stadium. The Glory scored first, with Billy Celeski finding space inside the area; but it was the only joy
in what would be a miserable day for the WA side.
It took just 3 minutes for Ross Aloisi to equalise, and when Shane Smeltz converted from point blank
range shortly before the break the home side was in front. The Phoenix demolition continued in the
second half, with the red card to Dino Djulbic removing any semblance of resistance. This result sees
the Phoenix enter the top 4 for the first time, while the Glory remain stuck at the bottom of the
ladder; calls for the sacking of coach Ron Smith growing louder.
Wellington Phoenix 4 (R Aloisi 13, S Smeltz 41, V Coveny 56, T Lochhead 83) Perth Glory 1 (B
Celeski 10)
