In a postponed Round 15 clash at Telstra Dome, Melbourne Victory moved to the top of the table when they defeated Adelaide United 1-0; giving them a clean sweep of victories over the Reds in 2008-09. The game was scoreless at half-time, but not for a lack of opportunities. Adelaide keeper Eugene Gelakovic was kept busy as the Victory made constant threats on the Adelaide goal, but the Reds' defence stood firm in the first half. After the break, Melbourne finally took the lead they had been threatening when a free kick from Carlos Hernandez just outside the area cleared the wall before finding the head of Nick Ward, who made no mistake to put the home side a goal ahead. The Reds had a golden opportunity to equalise a few minutes later from a corner, but a spectacular save by Victory keeper Michael Theoklitos denied Cristiano a goal that looked his for the taking after the corner landed at his feet with no Melbourne defenders able to dispossess him. After the near equaliser Melbourne shut up shop, and the Reds never looked likely to score again. 1-0 to the Victory sees them move to the top of the table.
