A-LEAGUE |
The last catch-up fixture saw Adelaide United and Queensland Roar play out a scoreless draw at Hindmarsh Stadium. The result sees the Reds’ lead at the top of the table extended to 2 points, while for the Roar the result was a missed opportunity to catch up to Melbourne Victory in the race for the double-chance and the opportunity to host the grand final. The Roar were the better side for much of the game, and had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 15th minute when a powerful header by Sergio van Dijk was acrobatically tapped over the bar by Reds’ keeper Eugene Galekovic. Shortly before half- time, Mitch Nicholls pounced on a ball that the Reds’ defenders failed to control; but the shot sailed agonisingly wide. Adelaide played better in the second half, but scoring opportunities were few and far between. As the game went on, with both sides desperately searching for a winner, the game became a scrappy affair; but the winner would elude both sides. The result sees the Reds 2 points clear of Melbourne Victory and with a superior goal difference, while a further 2 points behind the Victory and with an identical goal difference is Queensland Roar.
