Leading by 21 points in the last quarter, Collingwood were looking good to overcome North Melbourne; but
the Kangaroos had other ideas. A multi-pronged forward line continued to provide attacking options which
midfielders Brent Harvey, Shannon Grant and Daniel Wells created opportunities for. Helped as well by a
shocking centre bounce after a goal which went straight into the arms of Adam Simpson for him to fire the
ball to Ed Lower within range; the Kangaroos were not to be denied and recorded a meritorious 7-point win
to take the embattled club into the top 8.

In a high-scoring and entertaining contest at the Gabba, the contest became a shootout between two of
modern football's great forwards. Lance Franklin booted 8 for the Hawks, while Jonathan Brown scored 7
for the Lions. But the night went sour for Brown when he was reported for charging Hawthorn's Sam
Mitchell. It was a game of many twists and turns, multiple changes of the lead with the result in doubt right
up until the finish. In the end, Hawthorn maintained their unbeaten run with a 12-point lead; but even the
local Lions supporters could go home happy having seen a remarkable contest and seen that their side is
capable of competing with the best sides in the competition.

Melbourne's season of despair continued at the MCG on Sunday when they went down by 33 points o
fellow strugglers Carlton. The Blues weren't much better, but at least they had Brendan Fevola up forward
to provide a target and the midfield class of Chris Judd. The recruit from WA played his best game so far
for the Blues, dominating the midfield in a best-on-ground performance; while the controvesy magnet
Fevola booted a bag of 7. The Blues put their foot off the gas in the last term, enabling the Demons to at
least win the quarter, but by then the damage was done.

A high-scoring contest between the Western Bulldogs and Richmond at Telstra Dome on Sunday resulted
in the first draw of 2008. A 6 goals to 3 third quarter give the Tigers the advantage after an even first half,
and ticking into time on in the last quarter it was still Richmond by 19 points. A rushed behind where the
Tigers possibly could have cleared the ball out of trouble cut the margin to 3 straight kicks, and the
Bulldogs were able to force turnovers to score those 3 goals. The last came after Bulldog forward Brian
Lake was injured when taking a mark with 14 seconds on the clock. Will Minson was the hero for the
Bulldogs, taking the kick and calmly putting it through as the siren sounded to force a draw.

Port Adelaide finally broke through for their first win of the season, condemning the once-powerful West
Coast to their fourth straight defeat when the Power prevailed by 24 points in the twilight game at Subiaco
Oval. After an even first quarter, the Power asserted themselves in the second with an 8 goals to 2 term to
set up a break that the Eagles would never look like getting back. The Port midfield, especially Kane
Cornes, the Burgoyne brothers and David Rodan; suddenly found the form that had deserted them so far
this season, and as their confidence grew so did the Port scoreline; with Motlop and Ebert both shaking off
their scoring doldrums to record 4 goals each. For the Eagles, still struggling since the loss of Judd and
Cousins over the offseason, Rising Star nominee Ben McKinley continues to give them some hope of
turning things around in the future, and was again a lone hand up forward with 5 goals.

St Kilda snapped their 2-game losing streak, a 7 goals to 3 second term setting up enough of a break to hold out
Essendon. The Bombers' accuracy kept them in the contest, despite the lopsided nature of general play; but the
Saints always looked to have enough in reserve, and so it proved as the Saints went on to record a 36-point win.
Veteran midfielder Robert Harvey was again magnificent for the Saints, continuing to display the form that took
him to the 1997 and 1998 Brownlow Medals.

With a 6 goals to 1 opening quarter at Skilled Stadium, Geelong looked to be living up to expectations of a
comfortable win against Sydney. But the Swans proved to be tough competitors, working their way into the contest
and denying the much-fancied Geelong superstars room to move. By the last change, the Cats' lead had been
reduced to 10 points, and with the Swans coming home with the wind there were hopes an upset could be
brewing. But, as they have done so often before, the Cats proved they have the ability to step up a gear when
under pressure, and piling on 8 goals to 3 in the last the reigning premiers took out a 42-point victory in a match
that for most of the day looked to be much closer.
Geelong 6.2 7.8 8.13 16.18 (114)
Sydney 1.2 6.7 7.9 10.12 (72)

Adelaide were down on their best form on Saturday at AAMI Stadium, but did enough to hold out a sadly
out-of-form Fremantle in a lacklustre contest. Although the overall standard was down on expectations, an
exception was Andrew McLeod, the dual Norm Smith Medallist clocking up over 30 possessions in an easy
best-on-ground display. The Crows held a comfortable lead all day, and despite four late goals to the Dockers
cutting the margin to 17 points at the final siren the result of the match was never in doubt.
Adelaide 3.4 6.6 8.13 12.16 (88)
Fremantle 1.1 2.5 6.9 10.11 (71)
Goals : Adelaide - B Burton 3, S Goodwin 3, A McLeod 2, J Porplyzia 2, S Thomspn, K Tippett. Fremantle - J
