Thursday completed round 2. At this stage of the tournament, if every match had followed the form book, all the seeds would remain but everyone else would be eliminated. But as we know all too well, upsets are known to happen; although there were relatively few of them on day 4. But it wasn't looking good for some of the seeds early. Womens second seed Svetlana Kuznetsova was in all sorts of trouble against unpredictable Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova; who raced out of the blocks and served for the first set at 5-2 and again at 5-4. But she was again unable to hold, and once the set was brought to a tie-break the Russian took control, with Pironkova unable to score a point in the tie-break; before Kuznetsova breezed through the second set 6-2. Venus Williams was another player who looked in trouble early, with France's Camille Pin taking up the fight. Pin, who went within a challenged line call of upsetting Maria Sharapova in last year's extreme heat match, served for the first set but despite holding several set points was unable to hold. Pin also broke in the first game of the second set, but Williams immediately broke back and steadied to record a victory. But most of the other seeds had a more comfortable time. Fabrice Santoro was clearly out of his depth against Roger Federer, while Novak Djokovic was similarly untroubled in disposing of Simone Bolelli. It was a short afternoon for David Ferrer, with his Argentinian opponent Juan Martin Del Potro forced to withdraw injured during the second set. Lleyton Hewitt was the last Australian in the mens' singles draw, Hewitt ensuring a third-round place with a 4-set win over Denis Istomin. For a while an upset was threatening on Vodafone Arena, with Peter Luczak taking the first set against David Nalbandian; and with his serve looking solid, serving at 5-6 to take the second set into a tie-break. But against the run of play, Nalbandian was able to achieve the break to take the set, and from there was never threatened. Alun Jones also bowed out, going down in straight sets to Juan Carlos Ferrero. Veteran American Vincent Spadea, on an outside court, fought out an epic battle with German Denis Gremelmayr, and winning 9-7 in the 5th before celebrating by pumping his fists before high-fiving every member of the crowd on his court. 2007 runner-up Fernando Gonzalez was also pushed by Korea's Hyung-Taik Lee, coming from behind to win in 4 sets. No such drama in the evening session for James Blake, who got through easily in straight sets; while on Rod Laver Arena Ana Ivanovic had an easy night against Tathiana Garbin. But the other evening match was full of drama. Marcos Baghdatis took the first two sets against former champion Marat Safin, but the big Russian found his form with a series of brilliant shots to take the next 2 sets and bring the match to 5 sets. But the Cypriot regrouped in the last set, and held his composure to win a remarkable match. |
