Round 8 belonged to the Sydney Kings; the triple premiers of 2002-2005 starting the week with a thrilling 4-point win over Brisbane Bullets in a spiteful clash at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. A mellee in the first quarter set the tone for a match in which fouls were plentiful and feelings ran high, with the Kings having the edge when it mattered to take the points. The Kings then followed up this result with an even better one on Saturday night, travelling to Melbourne and defeating the previously-undefeated Tigers. It was a see-sawing contest for much of the night, with the Tigers leading by a point at the main break, but the Kings pulled away in the last for an 8-point win. New Zealand also made a move up the table this week. Thursday night was a thriller, when the Breakers came from behind to force overtime against Singapore and then get on top during the additional time. The Breakers then backed up on Sunday, travelling to the Gold Coast Convention Centre to defeat the competition newcomers by 13 points. After a disappointing start to the season, Townsville had a strong weekend to get back into contention, with strong wins against Wollongong and South Dragons. It was the start of a disappointing North Queensland double for the Hawks, who would be comfortably defeated on Saturday night by Cairns Taipans. West Sydney were also in good form, the Razorbacks getting the better of Gold Coast at home to move into the top 4. Brisbane Bullets snapped out of their 3-match losing streak on Saturday night, with a 7-point home win over Perth Wildcats in another match where the momentum fluctuated through the night. The remaining match was on Sunday evening, with Adelaide travelling to Singapore and returning with a much-needed win. |
