Round 9 action began with South Dragons travelling to Homebush to take on the Razorbacks and returning home with the points after a hard-fought 11 point win. Cortez Groves was in sensational form for the Dragons with 29 points. It was the start of a nightmare week for the Razorbacks. On Friday night they were flogged 105-75 by cross-town rivals Sydney Kings before travelling to the Gold Coast on Sunday for a 101-92 defeat; a 3-match losing streak that saw the West Sydney side crash from top-4 contenders to barely hanging on to a spot in the top 8. The NZ Breakers' solid form continued with a convincing 121-100 win over Wollongong. Phill Jones with 32 led all scorers, while Rick Rickert with 24 points was also a solid contributor. The Breakers then travelled to Cairns Convention Centre and returned in triumph with a 107-87 win. Kirk Penney was the difference between the sides with 30 points, including landing 6 3-pointers. It was a tough weekend for South Dragons. Friday night saw them defeated 99-79 at home by Gold Coast, before they flew over to Adelaide for a 96-93 defeat. Also in the horrors were Singapore Slingers, who remained stuck on the bottom of the ladder after another 2 losses, 110-98 against Townsville and 109-90 to a Brisbane Bullets side that appears to have recovered from their recent form slump. In a scrappy and low-scoring clash at Challenge Stadium, Perth Wildcats took out a 92-69 win over an appalling Wollongong Hawks side. After this round, the three teams that have shared the last 5 premierships are again the top 3 this season. In 4th place, in their highest weekly ladder position since their inception, is NZ Breakers ahead of competition newcomers Gold Coast. |
