There's a lot of travel in a short period of time in the NBL,
and that was a reality felt by Gold Coast Blaze in round 17. On
Thursday night they travelled to Auckland, and tasted a
heavy 126-93 defeat, thanks in part to a fine 32-point haul to
Kirk Penney. Just 2 days later, the Blaze had travelled a long
haul flight west across 4 time zones to again go down 103-88
to Perth Wildcats; a double defeat that was to cost the Gold
Coast side a top-4 spot.
Even the best sides have form lapses, and this round was to
provide one for the Kings. On Wednesday night it all looked
to be going to plan when they got off to a flying start against
the struggling Wollongong, but the Hawks kept coming back
and cut the margin to just a solitary point with 2 minutes left
on the clock before the Kings steadied. Then on Saturday
night, it was Adelaide 36ers who provided the upset.
Inspired by hauls of 35 from Adam Ballinger and 31 from Brad
Davidson, the 36ers gave the ladder leaders their third loss
of the season while keeping their own finals hopes alive.
Cairns Taipans several times looked to be running away
with their home game against Perth Wildcats, but the WA
side would never give up and in the end the Taipans were
only just able to hang on for a slender 4-point win.
Melbourne Tigers were expected to have little trouble
against the West Sydney Razorbacks, but the Pigs put up far
more fight than anyone could have anticipated; and in the
end only 3 points separated the sides.
In other results, Townsville were 20 points too good for New
Zealand Breakers; while Singapore climbed off the bottom of
the ladder after a 113-102 win over Wollongong.
