SYDNEY AFL ROUND 16 2010

Editor’s Note – For personal reasons, I wasn’t able to attend any games this weekend. The photos for this week’s article are taken from my archives.

The first weekend of August, the antepenultimate round of the 2010 season, served up perfect footballing weather. Grounds were bathed in sunshine, and to the relief of Sydney AFL organisers, there was no need for any last-minute fixture changes. And by the end of the weekend, the Premier Division finalists were officially confirmed, the Elimination Final fixture already finalised and the fate of the wooden spoon determined.

Sixth-placed Campbelltown went into the round still having a mathematical chance of qualifying for the finals. But to be involved in playoff action, the Blues needed to beat the high-flying East Coast Eagles at Monarch – an opponent the Blues had defeated at Bruce Purser earlier in the season. But the result never looked like repeating as the Eagles dominated from start to finish.
The Eagles dominated play from the start, but poor finishing hindered their charge in the first term. The Eagles missed several kickable chances in their return of 3.7 in the first quarter; but when they found their kicking radar in the second quarter the floodgates opened. A run of eight goals to one in the half saw the Eagles leading by 50 points at half time.
The second half was one-way traffic, as the Campbelltown resistance crumbled. By the end of the game, the margin was out to 130 points; the Blues having managed only two goals for the game. It was a disappointing way for the Blues to end any hope of making the finals, but the Eagles are on a roll and have now ensured themselves a double-chance for the upcoming finals.
Jamie Vlatko was again an irresistible force on the forward line with 8 goals, while Mark Goodey contributed 3. Stephen O’Connor, Mike Beardsley and Damien Charleston were among the best for the Eagles; but nearly all of them made a valuable contribution to the result. Chris Fretwell scored both of the Blues’ goals; Ryan Bottin-Noonan, Trent Wright and Ben Yakimov trying hard all day for the Blues. The Eagles retain a mathematical chance for the minor premiership, but a more probable option is that they will be taking part in the Qualifying Final. Campbelltown, after competing in last year’s playoffs, will not be part of the 2010 playoffs.

Sydney Uni extended their winning streak to 12 games, the best run by any club East Coast in 2006, when the Students were 35 points too good for Wollongong at North Dalton Oval on Saturday.
Top v bottom suggested the game could be a mis-match, but the Lions put up a determined performance and at times worried the Students. Kicking with the wind in the first term, the Lions led by 5 points at quarter time; but 6 unanswered Sydney Uni goals in the second term gave the Students a 32 point lead at the long break.
The third term saw the Lions work hard, applying pressure and desperation to trouble the high-flying Uni side. But converting their work around the ground into scoreboard pressure was a challenge, the Lions scoring 3 goals to 1. The Students led by 19 points at the last change, and Wollongong still had a fighting chance of taking the game. But the home side was unable to score at the southern end all day, and the Students would score two late goals to wrap up victory.
Mark Egan kicked 4 goals for the Students; while they were well served around the ground by Adam McConnochie, Sam Crichton and Richard Burrows. Beau Black, Guy Bartlett and Colin Lewis worked hard for the Lions. Sydney Uni, with 12 wins, remains a game clear ahead of Wests at the top of the ladder. But it was another disappointing afternoon for Wollongong, the result condemning the Lions to the wooden spoon for 2010.

The Blacktown TV game on Sunday saw North Shore take on Wests, with the Bombers needing a win to keep their hopes of a double-chance in the finals alive. And the Bombers worked hard early, creating plenty of opportunities; but too many shots were squandered in the first term and they would lead by just 8 points at quarter time. And when the Magpies hit their straps in the second term, it didn’t take long for them to grab the lead and the Bombers struggled to keep up,
The margin was 14 points at the long break; and in the early stages of the third term the Magpies threatened to run away with the contest. A late revival in the closing minutes of the third quarter put the Bombers briefly back to within striking distance; but the break ended any chance of the Bombers building any momentum. Instead the Magpies steadied and shut the Bombers out of the contest. North Shore would not score a goal for the final term until after the siren, and by then it was too late.
Former Swan Daryn Creswell took control of the forward line with a 6-goal haul, while Matt Withers weighed in with 4. Medair Kassem, Lynn Roehrig and Withers were among the Magpies’ best; while Evan Davis, Josh Houlihan and Ben Attwood were prominent performers for the Bombers. The Magpies sit one game behind Sydney Uni and with a better percentage, and should the Students slip up in either of the final two rounds, the Magpies will be looking to pounce and grab the minor premiership. The Bombers now can not make the top 3, and have booked themselves an Elimination Final date in the opening week of the finals.

At Ern Holmes Oval on Sunday, Pennant Hills finally wrapped up their finals berth with a 37-point win over Balmain. The Dockers got off to a flying start, stunning the locals as they went to a 15-point lead at the first change. But the tide turned in the second term, the Demons clicking into gear wth four unanswered goals to take the lead not long before the half time siren rang.
The Dockers tried hard, showing a vastly improved workrate compared to some results from earlier in the season. But they didn’t have the firepower to compete with a Pennant Hills side that was determined to return to the winning list after some recent defeats.
Luke Bilbe, Tom Angel and Alex Goodall got plenty of the ball for the Demons, while the Dockers were well served by Rohan Bates, Nick Davis and Chad Fletcher. The Elimination Final is now locked in as a North Shore v Pennant Hills clash, and next week’s matchup between the two sides at Gore Hill Oval could be a key preview to what can be expected when finals time comes.

The clash at the Village Green on Saturday afternoon had no bearing on the finals, but it was a match that lifted spirits in the St George camp after the Dragons defeated UNSW-ES by 28 points. As it was in many other games this round, the second quarter was decisive, and the Dragons took control with a run of 5 goals to 1 to lead by 36 points at the long break.
The third quarter was a defensive arm-wrestle. The Bulldogs kicked the only goal of the quarter, a term where the backlines of both clubs took control and the attacking midfielders were unable to exert any significant influence. And with the Dragons still well on top at three-quarter time, the Bulldogs needed to gamble and play a more attacking brand of footy in the last term. But despite getting a few goals back, the Dragons had enough of a buffer to hold the UNSW-ES charge out.
Matthew Dempster was the top forward of the day with a return of 7 goals, and along with Stephen Wilsen and Nathan Smith were among St George’s best. For the Bulldogs, Earl Shaw, Andrew White and Max Collett got plenty of the ball. No finals for either St George or UNSW-ES this year, and both sides have taken the opportunity to blood some rising stars from their junior ranks and give them a taste of senior football to prepare them for seasons to come.

THE RUN HOME
Just two weeks remain, and our final five is determined.
Sydney Uni remain on top, and just need to keep winning to get the minor premiership.
Wests are a game behind but with a better percentage. If the Students were to lose one of their remaining games, the Magpies can pass them.
East Coast to finish top would need to win both their remaining games, while Sydney Uni lose both their remaining games and Wests lose one of their games.
North Shore and Pennant Hills can not go up to third, but can not drop out of the five – so are now guaranteed to play each other in the first sudden death final.
Sydney Uni (56, 151.39%) – Campbelltown (Syd Uni No 1), St George (Olds).
Wests (52, 173.24%) – UNSW-ES (Henson), Wollongong (North Dalton).
East Coast (48, 192.48%) – Wollongong (Bruce Purser), Pennant Hills (Ern Holmes).
North Shore (40, 137.10%) – Pennant Hills (Gore Hill), Campbelltown (Blacktown).
Pennant Hills (31, 111.28%) – North Shore (Gore Hill), East Coast (Ern Holmes).
