Saturday night's womens singles final was the loudest in the history of the tournament, with the decibel duo of Victoria Azarenka and
Maria Sharapova putting in grunts throughout the match. But it was a short match, a one-sided contest, with Victoria Azarenka
taking out her first Grand Slam title with a straight sets win in the final.
It wasn't looking that way early. The match started with Maria Sharapova breaking Azarenka's serve, and then holding to love to go
2-0 up in the first set. But the tide would quickly turn, and Sharapova would win only one more game for the match.
Scores were level at 3-3 in the first set, and then Azarenka took the lead; before another break set the Belarusian up to serve for
the set. Holding to love, the first set was won.
The second set was a rout, and Sharapova's screams only became louder as the frustration set in. The shots weren't landing in, and
Azarenka had the perfectly-placed returns for anything Sharapova could throw up.
It was all over in just over an hour, Azarenka enjoying the fruits of victory. The title was her first major, the first time a player from
Belarus has won a Grand Slam singles title. And with it comes a new honour, as Azarenka becomes the world number one ranking.
