Novak Djokovic is the Australian Open champion for 2012, the third time the Serb has won the Australian Grand Slam tournament.
But before he could lift the trophy, Djokovic had to prevail against Rafael Nadal in an absorbing epic that went deep into the early
hours of Monday morning.
Djokovic served first, but it was Nadal that pulled off the opening break to go 3-2 ahead. But Nadal was under pressure, and had to
save three break points to consolidate his break. But Nadal's next service game saw Djokovic go one better and pull off the break to
level the set at 4-4. Most of the games in the opening set were going to multiple deuces; and by the time Nadal broke Djokovic
again and then served out the set, 71 minutes had already been played.
Nadal won his first service game in the second set, but a marathon game that went over 15 minutes saw Djokovic pull off what
would be the only break of the second set. Djokovic's serve was looking solid as the world number one got the match back on level
terms.
Momentum was running Djokovic's way, and it didn't take long for him to blow Nadal off the court in the third set, breaking the
Spaniard twice to take the set 6-2 and take the lead in the set. But there were more twists to come in this tale.
While Nadal had looked flat during the third set, he regained his composure in the fourth. For eight games that took close to an
hour, it was like two magicians trying to outdo each other with a spectaculr array of shots. But both players were looking like tiring
and needing a break; and it came when the heavens opened and the match was delayed while the roof was closed.
When play resumed, the set remained on serve until a tie-break was called on at 6-6. And with Nadal winning the tie-break, the
match went into a deciding set. By now the clock had ticked beyond midnight, but the night's entertainment was far from finished.
Nadal had the advantage of first serve in the fifth set, and was leading 3-2 on serve. And the break came, giving the Spaniard a 4-2
lead and the match was just two games away.
But the next game saw Djokovic immediately break back, and holding his serve, it was 4-4. Each player held their next serve to bring
it to 5-5. There had been long rallies, games with multiple deuces, plenty of break points saved in what had become a classic final.
Finally, it was Nadal who cracked, with Djokovic getting another break and then serving out the match. Both players collapsed from
exhaustion after what had been one of the all-time great matched. For Djokovic, it was his third Australian Open title, having taken
the silverware in 2008 and 2011. Adding to his Wimbledon and US Open titles from last year; this was the third Grand Slam final in a
row in which Djokovic had defeated Nadal in the final.
