Day 2 saw Lleyton Hewitt's campaign come to an early end. The former world number 1, now in the twilight of his career, was
shocked by Slovenian qualifier Blaz Kavcic and eliminated in four sets. But the news was better for rising star Bernard Tomic. In his first
tournament as a seed, Tomic progressed with a comfortable straight-sets win over Andreas Haider-Maurer.
Among the seeds, Feliano Lopez was an early casualty. Not looking comfortable and clearly struggling with injury, he dropped five
games against Florent Serra before throwing in the towel.
Gilles Simon dropped a set against Ryan Harrison, but all the other mens top 16 seeds progressed in straight sets.
Among the women, 12th seed Sabine Lisicki was a shock casualty, never looking comfortable against Bethanie Mattek-Sands and
going out in straight sets. Top seed Victoria Azarenka had a scare when she lost a first set tie-break to Alberta Brianti, but fought
