With an early start to the AFL season in mid-March, the pre-season competition gives the clubs a chance for an
important series of trials before the season commences and also allows the AFL to experiment with possible
new rules. Among the rules being trialled, controversially, was a limit of the number of interchanged permitted
per quarter. It was a rule that the coaches have already blasted, with heat, injury and fatigue being named as
reasons why the rule is unpopular among the coaching ranks.
The first pre-season match was played a week earlier; and was an exhibition of Australian football in the middle
east. A capacity crowd, mainly Australian expats, filled the ground and were treated to a fine display by an
Adelaide Crows side that showed they mean business in 2008 with an 81-point win over Collingwood.
Geelong continued in 2008 the way they left off in 2007, the reigning premiers treating Melbourne with disdain as
the Cats raced away to a 71-point demolition. St Kilda were another side that got off to a flying start in the
pre-season comp with a 40-point win over Richmond.
In tough conditions in Darwin, Western Bulldogs showed the first signs of bouncing back from a disappointing
2007 with a hard-fought 11-point win over the Kangaroos. It was a disappointing result for the North Melbourne
side that during the off-season had rejected a $100 million offer from the AFL to relocate to the Gold Coast,
electing instead to remain a Victorian club.
As the pre-season round continued, the AFL had announced a long-term plan to expand the competition in the
future, with a new Gold Coast team set to join the league in 2011 and a western Sydney team in 2012. And the
Gold Coast showed an appetite for football, despite the Kangaroos' snub resulting in a 3-year delay before the
region gets their own team. A crowd of over 10,000 came to Carrara, the majority supporting Essendon and
going home happy after the Bombers defeated Brisbane by 27 points; a good first-up result for new Bomber
coach Matthew Knights.
Another match with a sensational crowd was the western derby in Perth, where despite it being over 30 degrees
in a pre-season game, more than 32,000 turned up to see Fremantle record a strong start to their 2008
campaign with a 44-point win, a result soured by a serious knee injury to Paul Haselby that sees his season over
before it started.
The close game of the round was in Launceston, where despite Sydney resting more than a dozen of their best
team and Hawthorn going in close to full-strength, the Swans pushed the more highly-fancied Hawks all the way;
and only the long kicking of Hawthorn to land 3 9-point goals got them over the line. Again the result was
overshadowed by serious injury, with Sydney defender Nick Malceski damaging his knee and is likely to be out
for the season.
In Adelaide, Port Adelaide's first match since their demoralising grand final defeat resulted in more
disappointment when the Power were defeated by 15 points by a more determined Carlton lineup, a strong start
for the Blues and a good fightback after they had lost their last 12 matches last season.
