HARBOURSPORT

The opening round posed plenty of questions and answered a few, and Round 2 gave observers of Sydney football a few ideas of how our teams are going – which teams are looking good for the season ahead and which clubs still have some work to do to achieve their pre-season hopes.
The match of the round at Blacktown Olympic Park saw UNSW-ES take on North Shore. The Bulldogs, after a disappointing result in the grand final replay at Bruce Purser in the previous round, were looking to bounce back; while North Shore, after a comfortable first-up win over Wollongong, would get a better idea of how much they have improved over the off-season.
Even during North Shore’s strong seasons, UNSW-ES have been something of a bogey team for the Bombers, and that again looked to be the case in the early stages on Saturday evening. The Bombers suffered a blow early when big-name recruit Mark Powell landed on his wrist after flying for a mark, and would play no further part in the game. And the Bulldogs dominated possession and position in the opening quarter, but were unable to take full advantage of their superiority. The Bulldogs did manage two goals, the first from a mark by Gulden and the second a grubber from Robson; but should have been further in front than the 10-point advantage they held at the first change.
The second quarter started well for the Bulldogs, when Tom Betlehem marked 40 metres out and goaled. The Bombers got a goal back when Ron Wason blazed away from outside 50, but when Peter Kefalas dived low and scooped up a slips-catch mark and kicked truly, the Bulldogs had a 17-point advantage and the bogey team syndrome looked good to strike again.

But the Bombers had other ideas and worked hard to get back into the contest. Ron Wason scored another two goals, one with a long bomb from outside 50 and the other after the Bombers played on after a red-hot holding the ball decision deprived the Bulldogs of possession and advantage was paid. In time-on, the Bulldogs would again find themselves on the wrong end of a borderline holding the ball call when Adam Ziino stopped Peter Kefalas, with the ball spilling free for Adam Lord in the square to goal and give North Shore a half-time lead. And the third quarter started goal for goal, Brad Abbott marking and goaling from in front of the scoreboard being cancelled out by a mark to Ron Wason in the pocket to restore the North Shore lead.
That was to be the last lead change of the game, and as day turned into night it was one-way traffic as the Bulldogs would not score another goal for the remainder of the game. They came close on one occasion, when Ryan Meldrum held Brad Abbott off the ball; and although Betlehem picked up the ball and ran towards an open goal, advantage was not paid and Abbott’s kick sailed wide for a point.
But it was North Shore who had the answers, and when the game was there to be won it was the Bombers who stepped up. A pinpoint delivery found Kieran Emery on an angle, and Emery’s kick found the target. Another double by Wason, taking his tally for the game to 6, and another good mark to Emery saw the Bomber advantage grow to 25 points at the last change.

The final quarter saw the Bombers take complete control, while the Bulldogs were unable to provide any meaningful resistance. The Bombers ran through 5 unanswered goals for the quarter to turn a game that looked set to be a close contest into a blowout. A virtuoso performance from Ben Attwood was an early nomination for the number 44’s defence of his Goal of the Year award. But the most heart-warming goal for Bomber fans was the last. During Tom Hill’s two-year injury-enforced absence, it was largely accepted that his playing days were over. But his fitness improved dramatically over the off-season; and Hill returned to North Shore’s playing list for 2010. And in the final stages of his comeback game, the number 2 marked 40 metres from goal and kicked truly to celebrate his return to the game.
The final margin was 58 points, a solid win for North Shore. Ron Wason, with 6 goals, was a clear best on ground, while the Bombers were also well served around the ground by Teddy Strudwick and Sam Carruthers. The Bulldogs, yet to record their first win under new coach Michael Carey, showed plenty of positive signs early but were unable to last the distance. Angus Robson and Peter Kefalas were among their best.

Campbelltown recorded their first win for 2010 when the Blues defeated Balmain by 21 points at Monarch. The Dockers added another ex-AFL player, former West Coast premiership player Chad Fletcher to their list and he was one of their better players in a performance which was vastly improved on last week’s capitulation. But in the end, Campbelltown’s greater all-round depth won out as the Blues did enough around the ground to take the points.
Dale Chivas kicked 4 goals for the Blues, while Shanan Kershaw and Chris Jordan were their best. Daniel Bourke contributed 3 for the Dockers, while Fletcher and Tim Schmidt were listed as their best players for the day. The win will help Campbelltown get their season back on track after a disappointing first round loss; while the Dockers still have some hard work to do on the training track to make their new-look lineup gel into a superstar team.

Defending champions East Coast Eagles continued their strong start to their title defence with a comprehensive 77-point win over St George at Olds Park on Saturday afternoon. The Dragons toiled hard all afternoon and their endeavour couldn’t be faulted, but they were no match for a well-drilled star-studded Eagles lineup who piled on relentless pressure all afternoon.
Peter Dugmore, playing against his old club, booted a bag of 7 goals in a best on ground performance, while Jamie Vlatko contributed 4 goals. Other players who did well around the ground for the Eagles included Ryan Sylvester and captain Jon Vlatko, as the Eagles went to the top of the ladder. For the Dragons, Troy Cole kicked 3 while Justin Whyte and Michael Holmes worked hard all day; but the Dragons were unable to find enough around the ground, and their quest for their first win for 2010 has had to wait another week.

Two teams that went into their match in winning form faced off when Sydney Uni hosted Wests in a twilight match. And it was the Magpies who would maintain their winning run while handing out the Students’ first loss for the season when Wests took out a comfortable 63-point victory.
The Magpies got off to a flying start, six goals to one in the opening quarter opening up a 32-point win at quarter time, and from there the Students were never allowed to get back into the contest. Their best efforts in the second term were unable to make any dent in the lead, and when the Magpies scored another 7 goals in the third term the contest was decided. Matt Withers scored 7 for the Magpies, while Matt Eurell continued his strong early season form with 4. Rohan Lilly, Withers and Dwain Watkins were among their best. For Sydney Uni, Aaron Hawkins, Mark Egan and Alex Lee were among their better contributors.

Wollongong have never beaten Pennant Hills in Premier Division, but under lights at North Dalton Oval on Saturday night the Lions came heart-breakingly close to breaking through against the Demons for the first time. In a low-scoring game in which only eight goals were kicked for the evening, and in which neither team was able to find a multiple goal-kicker, the Demons fell over the line by just 3 points.
Pennant Hills’ best players included Luke Bilbe, Jack Trestrail and Mitch Aitken; while Jeremy Daniher, Sam Dowling and Troy Bartlett were solid contributors for the Lions. The game was a battle of the defenders, but the Demons did just enough to get home and maintain their undefeated start to 2010.
