Adelaide had a season to forget last season, finishing in 14th place. But the Crows showed their
credentials to be the big improvers of 2012 when they completed an undefeated pre-season with
a 34-point win over West Coast in the NAB Cup Final at AAMI Stadium on Saturday night.
The Crows had two early goals on the board, and were looking on top around the ground; but
were unable to add to their goal tally as the Eagles defended well. And during time-on, two super-
goals within a minute to Josh Hill and Mark Nicoski gave the Eagles an unlikely six point lead at the
first change.
But Nicoski’s night would come to a premature end with a hamstring injury not long after his super-
goal, putting the Eagle premiership player’s chances of appearing in Round 1 in doubt.
A free kick gifted Ashton Hams a goal for the Eagles in the opening minute of the second term. But
it would be West Coast’s only goal for the quarter, as they would squander countless chances to
build an imposing lead. At the other end, a much-needed nine-pointer to Taylor Walker got the
Crows back into the contest, and the home side would take the lead shortly before half time,
leading by three points at the long break.
The pendulum swung Adelaide’s way in the third term. Matthew Jaensch landed an amazing super-
goal from 60 metres out on the run to kick-start the Adelaide charge. The Crows extended their
lead to 18 points by three-quarter time, a margin that could have been considerably greater had it
not been for a string of missed shots, many of them gettable. But with the Crows having the sniff,
there was no way back for the Eagles; as the Crows added four goals to one in the final quarter to
help themselves to their first pre-season cup since 2003.
Bernie Vince had suffered a tumultuous pre-season, missing the previous game on a club-
imposed suspension following a nightclub incident. But he bounced back to his best form, showing
his value to the Adelaide team with 29 possessions to take out the Michael Tuck Medal, for best
on ground in the NAB Cup Final.
