After bright sunshine so far in the tournament, the skies began to close in; and as the evening session
unfolded it was a race against time to get through proceedings before the inevitable storm would hit. In
the end, to the relief of tournament organisers, the final match on centre court finished just minutes
before the rain came. But with more rain forecast for the next few days, delays to the business end of the
event are looking more likely.
The womens quarter finals were completed. The only seeded player remaining in the bottom half of the
draw, Denmark's 9th seeded Caroline Wozniacki, was untroubled in ending the USA's Melanie Oudin's
campaign with a comfortable straight-sets win. Yanina Wickmayer also advanced, the unseeded Belgian
having too much composure at key times in each set when the match was in the balance for the
Ukraine's Kataryna Bondarenko.
Novak Djokovic dropped the first set of his match against Fernando Verdasco in a tie-breaker, but the
Serbian 4th seed rallied to demolish Verdasco 6-1 in the second set and then had enough in reserve to
cruise to a 4-set win. Roger Federer was also taken to 4 sets, blowing a match point during his third set
tiebreak against Robin Soderling but fighting back to take the fourth set in another tiebreak.
