| Lleyton Hewitt led the Aussie charge on day 2, easily defeating Belgian Steve Darcis and conceding only 3 games. Peter Luczak, Alun Jones and Anastasia Rodionova also flew the Aussie flag in victory. Veteran Aussie Nicole Pratt announced her retirement after her 6-1 6-3 defeat to 10th seed Nadia Petrova. All of the top 16 seeds in action in the mens' draw were successful on day 2. Defending champion Roger Federer had little difficulty early against Argentinian Diego Hartfield. The only top 16 mens' seed to drop a set was Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis, but he was able to get through in 4 sets against veteran Swede Thomas Johansson in a match notable for vocal support for both players from a capacity Vodafone Arena crowd. It was a different story in the womens' draw, with 10th seed Marion Bartoli going down in an absorbing 3-set struggle to Swede Sofia Arvidsson. 16th seeded Dinara Safina was also a first round casualty, going down to Sabina Lasicki. Former champion Marat Safin is no longer a seed, but is comfortably through to the second round after a straight sets win over Ernests Gulbits. Svetlana Kuznetsova and Ana Ivanovic enjoyed comfortable straight-sets wins, while Anna Chakvetadze progressed without hitting a shot after her opponent was injured in morning practice and forced to withdraw. |
