THE CHAMPIONSHIPS, WIMBLEDON Day 1 review - Monday 25th June 2007.
|
The English weather played havoc with the opening of The Championships, with rain delaying the start of
the tournament by several hours.
When play finally got underway, there were few surprises on the first day. Roger Federer took little over
an hour to finish off Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili. Andy Roddick had a tougher time of it against Justin
Gimelstob, with the third set going to a tie-break, but still completing a straight-sets win. Justine Henin
was untroubled, with a 6-3 6-0 win over Jorgelina Cavero, while Serena Williams also had a comfortable
straight-sets win.
The only seed to go down on the opening day was German 27th seed Phillip Kolschreiber who went
down to Italian Florent Serra in straight sets. Mens' 24th seed Juan Ignatio Chela has a fight on his
hands; down 2 sets to 1 against German Benjamin Becker when play was suspended, 20th seed Juan
Carlos Ferrero has been taken to a 5th set by Jan Hajek. 15th womens' seed Patty Schnyder was also
given a fright by Camille Pin, the Frenchwomen who went within an inch of upsetting Maria Sharapova in
the blistering heat at the Australian Open.
In the match of the tournament so far between two veterans of the game, British hope Tim Henman and
25th seed Carlos Moya are locked at 2 sets all and 5-5 in the 5th; in what has been an extremely
entertaining contest.
The only Australian to get on the court on the opening day was Alicia Molik, who got through to the
second round with a 6-3 6-2 win over Anastasia Rodionova.
