THE CHAMPIONSHIPS, WIMBLEDON
Day 12 review - Saturday 7th July 2007.

The Williams resurgence climaxed when Venus took out the Ladies Singles titles at The
Championships for the fourth time. In January Serena marked her comeback from injury
and low ranking when she took out the Australian Open, and now it was Venus’ turn in the
spotlight.
Despite her relatively low ranking and 27th seeding, Williams’ superior experience at the
big occasions saw her going into her final against 18th seed Marion Bartoli as a hot
favourite, and so it was to prove with an early service break. But Bartoli was competitive,
breaking back to take the set back to 3-3. But, serving at 4-5, Bartoli was unable to hold
her serve to give the first set to Williams. From there the floodgates opened and it was all
one-way traffic in the second set for Williams to take the match 6-4 6-1.
It had been a remarkable comeback for Williams. For the last year she has rarely played,
injuries keeping her off the court and cutting her ranking to the status where she was
lucky to be seeded and was only a minor seed. But Venus, who has won previously in
2000, 2001 and 2005,
The mens semi-finals were also played, and predictably it was Roger Federer and Rafael
Nadal who progressed to the final. Federer made short work of Richard Gasquet, taking a
straight-sets victory. And it was even more so for Nadal, after Novak Djokovic was forced
to withdraw injured during the third set.
