The 2007 Australian Open began with defending champion, 7th seeded Serena Williams, having little
difficulty in disposing of Australian wildcard Jarmila Gajdosova in straight sets.
But meanwhile, third seed Jelena Jankovic was given a major scare by Austrian Tamira Paszek. Paszek
took the first set 6-2 before Jankovic bounced back to take the second set by the same margin. In
the third set, Paszek four times served for the match, having seven match points, but was unable to
capitalise on her numerous opportunities; and the experience of Jankovic shone through for her to
take out a memorable 2-6 6-2 12-10 victory.
The upset of day 1 took place on centre court, where British 9th seed Andy Murray was eliminated
by Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Tsonga took the first two sets, but Murray bounced back to take
the third 6-0 and looked to have the momentum to work his way back into the match. But the
fourth set was tighter, going all the way to a tiebreak; and critical points when they mattered gave
the unseeded Tsonga the victory.
11th seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo was also looking down the barrel of an early elimination, when
German Mischa Zverev took the first 2 sets and was up a break in the third. But Zverev was unable to
capitalise on his advantage, with Robredo breaking back to force the set to a tiebreak which he won
7-2; and then taking the final two sets for a marathon victory in nearly 5 hours.
18th seeded Argentinian Juan Ignatio Chela was also a casualty, going down to Spaniard Guillermo
Garcia-Lopez in 4 sets, while 24th seeded Fin Jarkko Niemenen was taken to 5 sets by Canadian Frank
Dancevic but survived.
Alicia Molik, on the comeback trail, fought back from a break down in each set to record a straight set
victory over Estonian Kaia Kanepi. Casey Dellacqua and Jessica Moore also got through, but Nick
Landahl, Brydan Klein and Monique Adamczak bowed out.
The evening session saw another upset, after an absorbing 4-hour marathon that saw Austrian Stefan
Koubek upset 16th seed Carlos Moya.
