Australia Day at the Open, and the feature match was the clash between defending
champion Rafael Nadal and British hope Andy Murray. But sadly, injury would intervene to
take much of the sting out of the contest before cutting it short.
Andy Murray took the first set, but after Nadal was wrong-footed in a rally late in the set he
landed awkwardly on his knee. An injury time-out was called while Nadal received
treatment. The match continued, and despite Nadal's movement being visibly impacted, the
Spaniard showed fighting spirit to take the second set to a tie-breaker. But after Murray
took the tie-breaker, and an early break in the third, Nadal was unable to continue and
Murray progressed to the semi final.
Murray's semi-final opponent will be Marin Cilic, after the Croatian won a 5-set marathon
against Andy Roddick. Cilic won the first two sets, but Roddick fought back to breeze
through the next two sets and force the match to a decider. But the momentum would
change again, the American unable to maintain his intensity as Cilic lifted a gear to take the
final set 6-3.
In the womens' draw, China's Jie Zheng continued her run of form, ending the giant-killing
run of Russia's Maria Kirilenko with an easy straight-sets win.
Jie's semi-final opponent will be Justine Henin, after the dream comeback continued with a
hard-fought win over 19th seed Nadia Petrova.
