On a good day for the Australians, it was a day of long matches but few upsets at Roland
Garros. The biggest Aussie contender, 7th seed Sam Stosur, breezed past Romanian
Simona Halep in straight sets. But the best Aussie result was reciprocal wildcard Carsten
Ball. An epic, in which entailed numerous swings in momentum, culminated with Ball
prevailing 9-7 in the fifth set to advance to the second round.
It was not the only epic contest on day 2. Third seed Novak Djokovic found himself in early
trouble against Kazakstan's Evgeny Korolev, dropping the first two sets before coming back
to win a 5-setter. Andy Murray was also forced to come from behind to defeat Richard
Gasquet; while Nicolas Almagro went the full distance before overcoming Robin Haase.
But for all the long contests, none of the top 20 mens seeds were defeated, while every
womens seed in action made her way to the second round.
