Womens semi-final day was a relatively short day, with both semi finals being decided
quickly. But for Australia's Samantha Stosur it was a day to remember, the Queenslander
qualifying for her first Grand Slam final with an easy straight-set win over Serbia's Jelena
Jankovic.
The first set took barely 20 minutes, Jankovic only winning one game as Stosur's big serve
and superior ground coverage left the Serb chasing the game. But Jankovic fought back in
the early stages of the second set, holding her first service game before breaking Stosur's
serve. And when Jankovic had game points at 40-15 in the third game, it looked as though
Jankovic was back in the contest.
But her revival was short-lived, as Stosur again took control. Stosur saved the game points
and broke back, and would not drop another game as she cruised to a 6-1 6-2 victory.
Stosur's opponent in the final will be Italian 17th seed Francesca Schiavone, who had an
even easier time against Russia's Elena Dementieva. Dementieva had been suffering from a
thigh inury all week, but aggravated the injury early in her match. She attempted to run it
out, and forced the first set to a tie-breaker despite being clearly in discomfort. But after
Schiavone won the tie-break, Dementieva was forced to throw in the towel and retire.
