Australia's Samantha Stosur pulled off the biggest result in her career, claiming the scalp of
top seed Serena Williams in a hard-fought encounter to book herself a semi-final berth.
Racing out of the blocks with a service break in the opening game of the match, Stosur
caught Serena Williams by surprise, and cruised through the first set 6-2. But the match
tightened in the second set, with all 12 games going with serve before Serena Williams got
through in a tie-breaker to take the match into the final set.
The final set was a war of attrition, both players defending their serves for 13 tense games.
But eventually it was Williams who cracked, and Stosur took the break. And, despite a few
nervous moments in the following game, Stosur held serve to take the match.
Stosur's semi-final opponent will be Jelena Jankovic, after the Serbian fourth seed ended
the giant-killing run of Yaroslava Shvedova.
Novak Djokovic looked on target to go through to the quarter finals when the Serbian third
seed got through his first two sets easily. But veteran 22nd seed Jurgen Melzer would go
on to create another boilover when the Austrian won the final three sets, going through to
the semi finals and eliminating Djokovic. No such dramas in the other quarter final, with
Rafael Nadal untroubled in ending the campaign of Nicolas Almagro.
