At the start of the day, no-one could have predicted the amazing scenes that would unfold
on Court 18. The outside court commenced action for the day with most of the few seats at
the court empty as American 23rd seed John Isner and French qualifier Nicolas Mahut
resumed their Tuesday match at the commencement of the final set.
No tie-break in the final set, so at 6-6 the match went on, with neither player able to land a
break. By 10-10, fans began to trickle in to the epic match. As word filtered around the
courts, Court 18 got fuller. The war of attrition continued, past 20-20, past 30-30 and well
into record territory. 40-40 was not deuce, and at 50-50 the crowd gave both players a
standing ovation.
By then light was dimming; and although neither player wanted to leave the court before
the match's conclusion, the umpire eventually halted play at 59-59; a final set to smash the
record books. The match will continue tomorrow, going into its third day.
In other matches, 7th seed Nikolay Davydenko was a second-round casualty, going down in
straight sets to Germany's Daniel Brands. Roger Federer and Andy Roddick dropped a set
but progressed through to the third round, while 16th seed Jurgen Melzer had to come from
two sets down to overcome Viktor Troicki in a 5-set match.
In womens' action, 13th seed Shahar Peer bowed out at the hands of Angelique Kerber.
4th seed Jelena Jankovic suffered a scare when she dropped the first set to Aleksandra
Wozniak, but bounced back to win the second and third sets.
