the top 20 remains alive in the tournament after the quarter finals.
That seed is top seeded defending champion Serena Williams. While other fancied picks
have been bundled out, Williams' unstoppable form continued unchecked. This time she was
pitted against China's Na Li. Li stayed with Williams for much of the first set, and after 10
games the set was still on serve at 5-5. But Williams got the all-important break to take the
advantage and then served out the set to love. The second set saw Williams get the early
break and from there it was only a matter of time until victory was assured.
But Serena won't be taking on sister Venus this time. The older sister was out of sorts, and
in a major boilover was never in the match against unseeded Bulgarian Tsevatana
Pironkova and went out in straight sets.
8th seed Kim Clijsters was also a casualty, going down in 3 sets to 21st seeded Russian
Vera Zvonareva. The remaining quarter final featured two unseeded players, and resulted
in Czech Republic's Petra Kvitova qualifying for her first Grand Slam semi final.
