Since the turn of the millennium, only once (in 2006) has the Wimbledon final not included at
least one of the Williams sisters. And that record would be maintained in 2010, with Serena
making it through to the decider after a win over the undeeded Petra Kvitova.
Against all expectations, Kvitova got an early break and then held serve to ignite hopes of a
major upset. But Williams quickly found her touch and broke back in the 8th game to level
the set at 4-4. Both players held serve comfortably through the rest of the set and it went
to a tie-breaker. But the tie-break saw Williams take the first four points and from there it
was inevitable the set would be won. And once Williams was a set ahead, she wasted no
time in wrapping up the match, breaking Kvitova twice in the second set to win 7-6 6-2.
Williams' opponent in the final will be Vera Zvonareva, after the Russian 21st seed came
from a set down to overcome the unseeded Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova 3-6 6-3 6-2.
Pironkova was looking good early with the opening set, but Zvonareva immediately fought
back to break in the opening game of the second set and it was one-way traffic from there.
And so the final opponents are known. Serena Williams will be the hottest of favourites, but
Zvonareva has upset several opponents to make the finals and will be confident in her
ability to do so again.
