The showpiece match on Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday night went perilously close to priducing one of the upsets
of the tournament; a result that few saw coming, especially after the end of the second set.
Everything looked to be going to the script when Roger Federer breezed through the first two sets against Gilles
Simon 6-2 6-3. But suddenly in the third set the unforced errors began to creep into the defending champion's game,
and Simon's ambitious shots began to hit their mark. Against all expectations Simon took the third and fourth sets and
by now looked to have the momentum. But Federer dug deep to recover the initiative and took the final set to keep his
2011 campaign alive.
Although the top seeds made it through on day 3, several were given a tough time. Venus Williams found herself
battling against unseeded Czech Sandra Zahlavova, and also battling a leg injury. But after dropping the first set,
despite being visibly restricted in her movement, Williams fought back to take the match in straight sets.
9th seed Fernando Verdasco was in trouble against Janko Tipsarevic after the Serb took the first two sets and had
match points during the 4th set tie-break. But having dodged that bullet, Verdasco ran away to take the final set 6-0.
Nicolas Almagro was another player taken to 5 sets, while an epic 3-setter saw Francesca Schiavone struggle to
shake off the fighting efforts of Canadian youngster Rebecca Marino before finally prevailing 9-7 in the third set.
