Saturday action at Flushing Meadow was played in windy conditions, and the swirling breeze made play difficult, especially
on the outside courts. And also blown away on day 6 was 5th seed Jelena Jankovic, who was defeated in straight sets by
Estonia's Kaia Kanepi.
Jankovic was struggling to control the ball when throwing it up to serve, and as her serve deteriorated during the first set,
frustration began to set in. Kanepi twice broke Jankovic to take the first set 6-2, and an early break in the second set saw
Jankovic in all sorts of trouble. The Serbian 4th seed fought back in the second set to break back and take the set to a
tie-breaker, but never looked comfortable and Kanepi was able to take out the tie-break to progress through to the round of
16.
15th seed Yanina Wickmayer was another seed who was looking down the barrel of a third round elimination. After
scraping through the first set in a tie-breaker against Swiss veteran Patty Schnyder, Wickmayer dropped her serve early in
the second set, and Schnyder kept her nerve to hold her break and take the match to a deciding set. And the final set would
go the distance, and at 6-6 a tie-break was required, which Wickmayer would hang on to ensure she would live to fight
another day.
It was plain sailing for the other seeds, with no other top 16 seed dropping a set. But 19th seed Mardy Fish needed all the
patience and stamina he could muster before finally falling over the line against Arnaud Clement in a 5-set marathon.
