Sunday action at Flushing Meadow saw another monumental upset when 4th seed Andy Murray was eliminated in the third
round by 25th seed Stanislas Wawrinka. It wasn't a result that looked likely after Murray took the set and led 5-3 in the
second. But when Murray served for the set, he was broken back by the Swiss minor seed and the second set was taken to
a tie-break, which Wawrinka took out.
Murray broke Wawrinka in the opening game of the third set, only for Wawrinka to twice break back as Murray began to show
the strains of a thigh injury. He called an injury time-out, but the momentum had swung Wawrinka's way and Murray was
powerless to arrest the slide. In nearly four hours, Murray's campaign was over as Wawrinka took out a 4-set victory.
Nicolas Almagro was also eliminated. Out of sorts and out of fitness, he was never in the contest against American 20th
seed Sam Querry.
Fernando Verdasco dropped a set against David Nalbandian, but fought back to take the match in four sets. Rafael Nadal
and David Ferrer enjoyed comfortable straight-sets victories.
