Baghdatis was on the wrong end of one of them, when he fell to veteran Frenchman Arnaud Clement.
An all-Serbian marathon saw Novak Djokovic forced to come from behind to overcome Viktor Troicki, while Fernando
Verdasco was taken the full distance by Fabio Fognini.
Mardy Fish found himself behind after the third set against Jan Hajek, but only dropped one more game for the match.
David Nalbandian dropped two sets against Rik De Voest but still managed to get through. But Radek Stepanek's US Open
campaign came to an end after going down to Julien Benneteau.
The upset of the day came in the womens' draw, where 8th seed Na Li easily won the first set against Kataryna Bondarenko
but then let herself down with a string of unforced errors that allowed the Ukranian back into the match to take it out in three
sets. Nadia Petrova also had her tournament come to an early end after going down in three sets to Germany's Andrea
Petkovic.
