The first Grand Slam tournament of 2012 started in bright Melbourne sunshine, with a full day of mens' and womens'
singles action.
Rising Australian star Bernard Tomic had a tough first-round engagement, up against 22nd seed Fernando Verdasco. And
the Aussie was soon in trouble, down two sets to love before coming back to take the match in five sets.
Another Aussie, wildcard Greg Jones, looked set to pull off a major boilover when he won the first two sets against 13th
seed, Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov on Margaret Court Arena. A full house was in voice as the Australian found himself on
top. But Dolgopolov steadied to win the five-set match, dropping only four games over the final three sets to progress
through.
There were few upsets on the opening day, with no top 16 seed dropping out. Tomas Berdych, Nicolas Almagro, Juan
Martin Del Potro and Agnieszka Radwanska all dropped a set but did enough to get through to the second round.
