Lleyton Hewitt's ranking has fallen in recent years. No longer a seed, and needing a wildcard to compete in this year's
tournament, Hewitt turned back the clock with a four-set win over 23rd seed Milos Raonic. Raonic took the first set, but
Hewitt fought back to take the second. The third set was an epic, but Hewitt prevailed in a tie-breaker; and then took
out the fourth to win the match.
There was carnage among the seeds, with some big names going out. Vera Zvonareva and Marion Bartoli crashed out of
the tournament in straight sets. Janko Tipsarevic was another straight-sets casualty, never being in the contest against
Richard Gasquet. And a marathon five-setter saw Gael Monfils out at the expense of unseeded Kazakstani Mikhail
Kukushkin.
Petra Kvitova was the beneficiary of Maria Kirilenko's injury, going through after Kirilenko pulled out after the opening
game of the second set. Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray had easy straight-sets wins.
