The final Grand Slam tournament for 2011 got under way, under overcast skies at Flushing Meadow. The weather remained
threatening all day, but play was only briefly suspended for rain and a full day's program was played.
But it was not without its shocks, with the boilover of the day coming with the demise of Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.
Unable on the hardcourt to replicate the form she showed on the grass in England, Kvitova was never in the hunt against
Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru, and crashed out of the tournament in straight sets.
Third seed Maria Sharapova also got herself in trouble, dropping her first set to Britain's Heather Watson. But the Russian
third seed bounced back to take the match in three sets.
On the mens' side of the draw, Serbian 15th seed Viktor Troicki departed the tournament on the opening day. Drawn to play
Columbia's Alejandro Falla, the match was a five-set marathon; but Falla pulled off the vital break when it mattered most to
take the final set 7-5 and eliminate the seed.
Good news in the Australian camp, with Sam Stosur and Bernard Tomic both enjoying comfortable straight-sets wins to
progress to the second round. But Anastasia Rodionova wasn't so lucky, going down in two long sets to Russia's Alla
Kudryatseva.
