On the second day of action in the US Open, Na Li was the shock casualty. The Chinese winner of the French Open was
strangely out of sorts, and was never in the contest against Romanian Simona Halep, crashing out in straight sets.
Seventh seed Francesca Schiavone won the first set against Kazakstan's Galina Voskboeva comfortably enough, but then
went into a horror patch in the second set; with a string of unforced errors seeing her drop the set 6-1 to see the match
brought back onto level terms. But when the pressure was on, Schiavone recovered to take the set and book her passage
to the second round.
No such worries for the likes of Caroline Woziacki, Victoria Azarenka, Andrea Petkovic, Jelena Jankovic, Svetlana
Kuznetsova and Ana Ivanovic, who all breezed through in straight sets.
On the mens side of the draw, 16th seed Mikhail Youzhny struggled for form and consistency, and was bundled out in
straight sets by Latvia's Ernests Gulbis. David Ferrer and Stanislas Wawrinka each dropped a set but made it through in
four.
Top seed Novak Djokovic had little trouble in running injured Irishman Conor Niland around the court before Niland threw in
the towel late in the second set. Rafael Nadal and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga enjoyed comfortable straight-sets wins.
