A day of upsets saw several big names depart from the tournament. None bigger than second seed Vera Zvonareva. The
US Open champion had an off day and was never in the hunt against 32nd seeded Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova, going
out in straight sets.
German 11th seed Andrea Petkovic was another casualty, going down in straight sets, while Svetlana Kuznetsova won the
first set but then went down in the second and third to Belgian Yanina Wickmayer.
Andy Roddick was another shock casualty, dropping tie-breaks in the first and second sets to unseeded Spaniard Feliciano
Lopez and then losing his serve in the third to crash to a straight-sets defeat.
But there was great news for Australia. Teenage young gun Bernard Tomic dropped the first two sets to Russia's Igor
Andreev but came back to take the match in five sets and progress to the next round. David Ferrer was another player to
take part in a marathon five-setter, but eventually fell over the line against America's Ryan Harrison.
