Czech ninth seed Tomas Berdych has made one Grand Slam final in his career to date, when he made the decider of the
Wimbledon tournament in 2010. But his dream of a second final appearance would come to an abrupt end in the third
round. Going down in the opening set to Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic, Berdych felt a twinge in his leg and was forced to take
an injury time-out. His movement was noticably reduced when he returned, and although he tried to run it out, his condition
was getting worse, and after five winless games in the second set, Berdych was forced to throw in the towel.
Former multiple Grand Slam tournament winner Serena Williams doesn't play much these days, and her ranking has
slipped, relegating her to 28th seed. But on her day, she can be as dangerous as the top players, and she showed that in a
punishing first set against fourth seed Victoria Azarenka, breezing through the set 6-1. The second set was closer, going to
a tie-break, but Williams took out the tie-break to claim the scalp of the Belarusian higher seed.
Jelena Jankovic was also a casualty, going down in straight sets to Russia's Anastasia Pavlyenchova. And it was far from
plain sailing for Francesca Schiavone, who dropped the first set to Chanelle Scheepers but fought back to take the match.
Also suffering a shock loss of a set but still comfortably getting through was former champion Roger Federer.
