Only one seeded player went out of the tournament on the second day; but for the tournament organisers it was the
one seed they'd have wanted to keep alive more than any other. The big Australian hope, US Open winner Samantha
Stosur, was stunned by Romanian Sorana Cirstea. After the Australian sixth seed got an early break, and looked to be in
control, she inexplicably failed to serve out the first set, being broken to force a tie-break. Against all expectations, Cirstea
won the tie-break easily, and Stosur was out of sorts as she was never in the contest in the second set.
Former world number 1 Lleyton Hewitt had some better Australian news. On Rod Laver Arena in the evening session,
Hewitt had a comfortable win to go through to the second round.
The other seeds all enjoyed wins to go through to the next round. Gilles Simon was given a scare, taken to five sets by
Thailand's Danai Udonchoke. Veteran Juan Carlos Ferrero, no longer seeded, gave Viktor Troicki a challenge; but the
Serbian 19th seed progressed in five sets. On the womens' side of the draw, Vera Zvonareva and Sabine Lisicki dropped
sets but did enough to get through to second round action.
