Showers only briefly interrupted play on the third day, enabling the opening round matches to be completed and a start
made on the second round. For Australia's Jarmila Gajdosova, it was a successful opening to the tournament, as she
faced few worries in recording a straight-sets win over Alona Bondarenko.
The upset of the day was the demise of 14th seed Stanislas Wawrinka. The Swiss seed was off his game for much of the
day, and had trouble in responding to the aggressive and determined play of Italy's Simone Bolelli. Although Wawrinka
twice broke back to force tie-breaks, he was never seriously in the running and crashed out of the tournament.
France's Gael Monfils dropped a set against little-known Slovenian Grega Zemlja, but fought back to take the match in four
sets. Andrea Petkovic was another player who had a tough battle, being taken the full distance by Canada's Stephanie
Dubois before eventually falling over the line. Former champion Venus Williams' ranking is not what it once was, now only a
minor seed; and Williams was made to fight all the way before eventually getting up 8-6 in the third set against Mirjana
Lucic.
Local hero Andy Murray was untroubled in progressing through to the third round. Rafael Nadal, Tomas Berdych, Andy
Roddick, Mardy Fish, Vera Zvonareva, Victoria Azarenka and Petra Kvitova also enjoyed comfortable straight-sets wins.
